A Rockdale County firefighter died Thursday morning in a single-car crash while driving to work, authorities confirmed.

Robert Alexander Sewell III was killed while driving on wet roads in the Conyers area, department spokesman Jacade Long said.

Sewell was on special assignment in the department’s training division as a coordinator for new recruits, according to a news release. He joined the fire department in 2016.

“Robert Sewell was an asset to the department and a natural leader,” Chief Dan Morgan said in the release. “He will be missed.”

A memorial service is scheduled for 9 a.m. Wednesday at the Rockdale County Auditorium, 903 Main Street, Conyers. The public is invited.

“Please keep the family and Rockdale County Fire Rescue personnel in your thoughts and prayers,” the release said.

No other details about the incident have been released.
