A Gwinnett County man fatally shot his girlfriend in the apartment they shared before turning the gun on himself, police said.

Lachica Ringwood, 39, and Jamaya Morris, 40, were found dead in their Preston Hills at Mill Creek apartment near Buford Monday afternoon, according to police spokesman Cpl. Wilbert Rundles. Police have ruled the incident a murder-suicide, he said in a news release Tuesday.

Officers were sent to the apartment in the 2900 block of Buford Drive on a welfare check at the request of Ringwood’s family, according to Rundles.

“The family member said she had not spoken to Lachica in a couple of days, which was abnormal, and she was concerned for Lachica’s safety,” he said.

Family members told police Morris had openly argued with Ringwood in front of them and “had recently made comments that had them concerned,” Rundles said.

When officers arrived, they found Morris lying on top of Ringwood with “an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound,” Rundles said.

“Once his body was removed, detectives discovered that Lachica also had a gunshot wound” that appeared to be the cause of her death, he said.
