A woman was killed in Gwinnett County when her husband shot her and then turned the gun on himself, police said Monday morning.

Alton Kelly, 53, is in critical condition with life-threatening injuries.

The shooting happened at a home on Bridge Walk Drive in unincorporated Lawrenceville about 5:40 a.m., Gwinnett police Cpl. Michele Pihera said.

Melissa Kelly, 45, and her husband were taken to Gwinnett Medical Center in Lawrenceville, police said. Melissa Kelly later died as a result of her injuries, including a wound to the arm.

Officers have been called to the home in the 3700 block of Bridge Walk multiple times over the past several days about domestic incidents, Pihera said.

In a call to dispatchers about 10:30 p.m. Saturday, a caller reported an argument between two men regarding whether one of them should continue living there, according to police records of the call.

In another call to dispatchers about an hour later, a woman called about her sister-in-law and husband arguing at the location.

Police have not said who made the calls.

Officers interviewed family members who were in the house at the time of Monday’s shooting. Pihera said one of those is the couple’s son. No one else inside the house was injured.

It’s unclear what caused the latest dispute.
