Atlanta police are investigating the death of a man found shot on an I-285 bridge early Friday morning, Channel 2 Action News reported.

A passing motorist spotted the man lying on an interstate overpass on Boulder Park Drive around 1:30 a.m., police told Channel 2. It was first assumed the man was struck by a car.

But when officers arrived on the scene in southwest Atlanta, they discovered the victim was shot in the chest. The news station reported the man, who has not been identified, is in his mid- to late 40s.

Police are investigating his death as a homicide.

“Currently, we have no idea how this individual got here or what type of altercation led to his demise,” Atlanta police Lt. Carven Tyus told Channel 2.

Investigators on the scene said a grocery bag found nearby could indicate the man was walking from a store, the news station reported.

“It appears that he was walking up the street and that someone may have shot him,” Tyus said. “It appears that he may have walked a few more steps before he collapsed from his injuries.”

The bridge was closed overnight while homicide units were on the scene. It was reopened around 5:30 a.m.
