A man who waved a rifle at officers was shot and wounded Wednesday afternoon by a Dallas police officer in Paulding County, an official said.
According to Dallas police, an officer and a Paulding County sheriff’s deputy responded to a shots-fired call on the Silver Comet Trail. The call came in about 2-2:30 p.m.
The officers saw a man in his 20s sitting on a picnic table, police said. The man stood up, and the officers ordered him to drop a rifle in his hand.
The man refused to drop the rifle and waved it in the air, pointing it in the direction of the officers, police said.
“According to the radio traffic, the male did fire shots in the direction of the officers,” Paulding sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. Ashley Henson told Channel 2 Action News.
The officer fired twice, hitting the man in the torso and in a leg, police said.
The man was taken to a local hospital, police said. The extent of his injuries was not known.
The man is known to local authorities, who have made contact with him before, police said. His identity was not released.
