A 10-month-old died Monday, and his mother and her boyfriend were arrested in connection with the boy’s death, Gwinnett County police said.

Dennisa Vega-Rivera, 27, of Norcross, is charged with second-degree child cruelty in the death of Amir Vega, Gwinnett police spokeswoman Cpl. Michele Pihera said Tuesday in a news release. Vega-Rivera’s boyfriend, Jahlin Corey, 27, of Norcross, is charged with felony murder, aggravated assault and aggravated battery.

Medical officials were called to an apartment in the 1400 block of Beaver Ruin Road in Norcross about 4:30 a.m. Monday after someone reported a baby with breathing problems, Pihera said. The boy was taken to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and died a short time later, according to police.

Hospital staff notified authorities of the death after seeing the baby had injuries. His body was taken to the Gwinnett Medical Examiner’s Office for evaluation. An autopsy revealed the boy had a fractured skull, fractured ribs and intestinal bleeding, Pihera said. Police secured a warrant to search the Norcross home, she said.

Officers confronted Corey and Vega-Rivera with the autopsy results. The explanation as to what happened was “inconsistent with the findings” of the autopsy, and they were arrested, Pihera said.

Corey and Vega-Rivera were booked into the county jail, where they remain without bond.
