A man found his father dead Monday night near a downtown Atlanta church, Channel 2 Action News reported.

The victim, identified by the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office as 46-year-old Rodick McBride of Riverdale, was shot in the head and killed in the 300 block of Peachtree Street.

Investigators believe the shot was fired from a passing car in the area of Atlanta First United Methodist Church, Atlanta police told AJC.com. Bullets shattered a church window.

Officers responded to the intersection of Porter Place and Peachtree Street about 9:30 p.m. after the man’s son ran to a nearby business and called 911, Channel 2 reported.

“The preliminary investigation indicates a vehicle approached the victim and he was shot,” police spokesman Officer Jarius Daugherty said in a statement. “The victim died as a result of his injuries. At this time, investigators believe the suspect and victim were familiar with each other in some way.”

Police are still working to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting, he said.
