A 16-year-old boy has been arrested and charged with murder in the death of his girlfriend in Barrow County, Channel 2 Action News reported.

Although authorities are not releasing the names or other information about the suspect or victim because they are children, officials said the boy is being held at a regional youth detention center. He will turn 17 next month and will be charged as an adult, Channel 2 reported.

Barrow sheriff’s deputies discovered the girl’s body when they were called just before 1:40 p.m. Thursday to the 400 block of East Midland Avenue.

“While en route, deputies were advised this call was possibly in reference to a murder at that residence,” Capt. Ryan Sears said.

When they arrived on the scene, they made contact with two people outside the residence, then went inside. The girl was found in one of the bedrooms, Sears said.

Officials learned the boy left the scene shortly before deputies arrived, prompting them to initiate a search. About 45 minutes to an hour later, they found him, Sears said.

Authorities have not given a possible motive or a cause of death.

“We don’t know the cause of death, at this point,” Sears told Channel 2, “(but) it was either a shooting or a stabbing.”
