Homeowner shoots, kills 18-year-old intruder, Clayton County police say

A Clayton County homeowner shot and killed an 18-year-old who broke into his home overnight, police said.
Officers were called to the residence in the 9000 block of Jenni Circle just before 3 a.m. Friday after a man called 911 and reported shooting an intruder, according to Clayton County police spokesman Officer David Portis.

Upon arrival, police found Jayven Jackson lying at the bottom of the stairs with gunshot wounds, authorities said. Jackson, who lived in Paulding County, died on his way to the hospital.

The homeowner told police he was awakened by a loud banging at his front door. According to police, he said the teen broke a glass pane next to the door and reached through to unlock the door before heading up the stairs.

The homeowner grabbed his rifle and fired several shots at the intruder, police said. Jackson was struck in his lower extremities and crawled down the stairs toward the front door, where officers found him. The 18-year-old did not have a weapon.

Police said no charges will be filed against the homeowner.
