Officers search for evidence after two groups started shooting in the middle of Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway on Tuesday morning. A 19-year-old man was shot in the back.

A man was shot Tuesday morning in the middle of a major road through the northwest Atlanta neighborhood of Bankhead.

The investigation shut down Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway for about two hours between Marietta Boulevard and Lowery Boulevard while Atlanta police were on scene. The road reopened about 7:30 a.m., according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.

Officers arrived about 5:30 a.m. and found the 19-year-old victim shot in the back, according to police. He was rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he was sedated but stable Tuesday morning.

“It appears there was some sort of altercation in the middle of the street between two groups fighting,” Capt. William Ricker told AJC.com. “Security was involved as well.”

Investigators are still trying to piece together what happened. The security officer was not on scene when police arrived, and Ricker said they do not know where the officer was working. An event hall and a car wash are located nearby.

“We're still trying to get the facts of actually what was taking place between all the groups,” he said.

A few employees of a nearby business have been detained, but no one was charged Tuesday morning, according to police. No further information was released as an investigation is ongoing.
