The GBI opened its 22nd officer-involved shooting investigation of 2020 on Friday.

A foot chase through a South Georgia city ended Friday afternoon when police shot and killed an 18-year-old.

Officers with the Cuthbert Police Department were investigating a car break-in when they confronted the teenager, identified by the GBI as Kamaal Koby Edwards of Cuthbert, according to a spokeswoman for the state agency.

“A foot chase ensued that resulted in gunfire between the officers and Edwards,” spokeswoman Natalie Ammons said in a news release. “Edwards was pronounced deceased at the scene.”

One officer sustained minor injuries, according to the GBI.

The agency was requested about 2 p.m. Friday to investigate the officer-involved shooting in Cuthbert, which is the county seat of Randolph County. The city is located about 55 miles southeast of Columbus and 165 miles southwest of downtown Atlanta.

The police shooting was the 22nd the GBI has investigated this year.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution also tracks officer-involved shootings that don't involve the GBI, and those numbers sometimes differ from the GBI's tally.

Anyone who witnessed the shooting is asked to contact the GBI office in Sylvester at 229-777-2080.

Once an investigation is complete, the GBI will turn over its findings to the Pataula Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review.
