A man walked into a moving car in an effort to make it look like he was hit before pulling out a knife and being shot by Gainesville police Monday afternoon, authorities said.
The man, who has not been identified, appeared to be impaired and was stumbling down the middle of the road when a truck tried to go around him on West Avenue at Comer Street, the GBI said in a news release Tuesday. The man “walked into the truck and fell down from the impact,” according to the GBI.
That prompted firefighters and paramedics to be called to the scene about 5:30 p.m.
“The individual had to kind of walk into the vehicle and made it look like they had hit him with the vehicle,” police Sgt. Kevin Holbrook told Channel 2 Action News.
As first responders attempted to walk toward the man to help him, he pulled out a knife, Holbrook said. The man then allegedly began to threaten everyone nearby.
“This individual charged at the officers with a knife, and unfortunately one of our officers did have to discharge our firearm, striking the individual,” he told the news station.
The man, who was shot multiple times, was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center, Holbrook told Channel 2. The GBI said one of the officers also used a Taser on the man, who underwent surgery and remained in critical condition Tuesday morning.
An officer was taken to the hospital for observation, according to a tweet from the department.
The GBI was called in to assist the department in investigating the officer-involved shooting. It is the 65th such investigation the GBI has been called in to investigate in 2019.
The last one happened Sunday night in the 2600 block of Lone Oak Trail in Kennesaw after someone reported a domestic violence incident. The incident was between a woman and her brother, Channel 2 Action News reported.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution also tracks officer-involved shootings that don't involve the GBI, and those numbers sometimes differ from the GBI’s tally.
