A former Cobb County police officer was arrested Monday on a felony sexual assault charge, authorities said.

Andres Alcaraz resigned Sunday from the police department, and an arrest warrant was obtained Monday against him on a charge of sexual assault by a law enforcement officer, the department said in a news release.

Just more than a week ago, a woman spoke with another officer and said she had been sexually assaulted by an unknown on-duty officer during an encounter in May, the release said. An internal investigation was launched, which led to Alcaraz being placed on administrative leave.

He was arrested Monday afternoon and remains in the Cobb County jail.

No other details have been released.
