Two people were killed Monday when an SUV flipped several times before hitting a pine tree in Bartow County, authorities said.

The wreck happened on eastbound U.S. 411 near Alford Road, the Georgia State Patrol told AJC.com. Ronald Jackson, 56, of Cartersville, was driving a 2005 Jeep Cherokee when he moved into the left lane, “suddenly overcorrected” and drove off the right side of the road.

The Jeep overturned several times before hitting a tree with the top and driver’s side of the vehicle, the GSP said. Jackson and a passenger were trapped inside and needed to be extricated, Bartow County Fire Deputy Chief Dwayne Jamison said.

Jackson and the 22-year-old woman from Chattanooga both died at the scene. She has not been identified since her family has not been notified.

All eastbound traffic was shut down between Rome and Cassville after the crash.
