A police chase last Tuesday afternoon ended with a crash, a damaged fence, a downed cable pole and a 17-year-old carjacking suspect in custody, authorities said.

Capitol police were involved in a pursuit that ended with the suspect crashing a sedan along Metropolitan Parkway near Perkerson Road in southwest Atlanta, police said. The suspect, identified as Dauntae Kiseem Chandler, was in a black Dodge Dart that had been reported stolen at gunpoint about 12:30 p.m.

The officer spotted the stolen car in the 1100 block of Murphy Avenue driving in the opposite direction, so he made a U-turn, according to a news release. The officer tried to conduct a traffic stop, but the Dodge’s driver instead sped up.

The chase progressed onto Metropolitan Parkway, where the officer performed a PIT maneuver. That caused the suspect to crash into a chain-linked fence and a cable pole before it stopped on the sidewalk near Perkerson Road, the release said.

Chandler got out of the vehicle and tried to run away, but he was quickly found hiding in a crawl space underneath a vacant house off Pomona Circle, the release said. Atlanta police assisted with the search.

Chandler’s custody was handed over to Atlanta police, which will handle the suspect’s charges, Capitol police said. He faces counts of aggravated assault, hijacking a motor vehicle, obstruction and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, according to Fulton County Jail records.

He remained in custody Tuesday afternoon without bond.
