A Brookhaven man shot and killed a suspected burglar Wednesday after finding the intruder inside his home, police said.

Officers were dispatched to the residence on Wilmont Drive about noon after getting a call about a person shot, Brookhaven Deputy Chief Brandon Gurley told AJC.com.

“What we believe is that the homeowner came home to a burglary in progress,” he said. “The person inside (who) was shot, we believe, is the suspected burglar.”

Police processed the scene for most of the afternoon before leaving the neighborhood Wednesday evening.

Gurley said the homeowner is cooperating with investigators and that no charges have been filed against him.

The body of the suspected burglar was turned over to the DeKalb County Medical Examiner’s Office for identification. His name will be released once his family has been notified.
