A shoplifting suspect injured an officer after he escaped from police and led them on a short chase, Atlanta police said.

Officers responded to a shoplifting call about 5:15 p.m. Friday at the Target on the 1200 block of Caroline Street, Officer Stephanie Brown said. Police arrived to take the suspect, who has not been identified, into custody after he was arrested by a security guard.

“The officer removed the security guard’s handcuffs and began to place the suspect in the backseat of the patrol car,” Brown said. “At some point during the transfer of custody or inside the car, the suspect was able to escape.”

The suspect then led police on a pursuit that took them to 100 block of Holiday Avenue, just minutes away from where the shoplifting occurred.

There, police said the man ran into one of the officers, causing a small laceration to his face. The officer was taken to the hospital and is in good condition.

Brown said the suspect was taken to the hospital for evaluation and will be placed in police custody.

No other details were released.
