Two 17-year-olds are in custody after a carjacking near an Atlanta IHOP and a police chase Wednesday morning, authorities said.

According to Atlanta police, officers responded to the IHOP in the 400 block of Ponce de Leon Avenue about 4:50 a.m. after getting a report of the carjacking.

Investigators spoke with the victim, who said he was parked near the intersection of Charles Allen Drive and Ponce de Leon Avenue when two gunmen approached his vehicle, pulled out handguns, made him get out and took off in the car.

About 8:05 a.m., authorities noticed the same car in the 100 block of Cleveland Avenue in southwest Atlanta, police spokesman Officer Jarius Daugherty said. Officers tried to pull the car over, but police said the vehicle kept going.

The car didn’t get far down Old Hapeville Road before it crashed. Two people inside the vehicle got out of the car and ran, according to police.

“After a short chase,” officers were able to capture both people and recover a handgun, Daugherty said.

Atlanta police identified the suspects as Demarco Ponder, 17, of Atlanta, and Christopher Brown, 17, of Stone Mountain.

They face charges of armed robbery, hijacking a motor vehicle, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, possession of a pistol by a person under 18 and obstruction, according to Fulton County Jail records. Brown also faces an attempt to flee or elude officers charge.

They were denied bond Thursday by a magistrate judge and remain in the Fulton County Jail. The next court date is scheduled for Feb. 14.
