A driver arrested for crashing an SUV into a group of girls involved in a street fight is the mother of one of the girls, the Georgia State Patrol confirmed Friday.
Shameka Peoples, 31, of Griffin, was arrested at her parents’ house in Griffin about 9:15 p.m. Thursday after her father called the GSP, spokeswoman Tracey Watson said.
Peoples was charged with five counts of aggravated assault and two counts of cruelty to children among other charges, according to the GSP.
Five people, including Peoples’ daughter, were injured when she drove her Lexus SUV into crowded Quilly Street, officials said.
She left the scene before troopers arrived, according to the GSP.
The incident began as the girls were fighting about 6:20 p.m. Wednesday, the GSP said.
One of the girls was flown to Grady Memorial Hospital, and the others were taken to Spalding County Hospital, the GSP said. Their conditions are unknown.
Peoples was also charged with reckless driving, driving on the wrong side of the road, failure to maintain a lane, aggressive driving, hit-and-run, reckless conduct and serious injury by vehicle.
She is being held at the Spalding County jail.
