A Cobb County woman, in describing a deadly hostage ordeal, said she believes her ex-boyfriend meant to kill her, not her grandmother.

Jessica Adams told Channel 2 Action News that she, her 7-year-old daughter and her grandmother had been running errands before Tuesday’s incident at her Mableton home.

Adams said her ex-boyfriend, James Martin, 26, of Austell, was waiting in a storm cellar for her to arrive home. Her grandmother, Faye Spruell, 80, went into the house first.

Spruell had kicked Martin out of the house a day earlier.

“I heard, ‘Bang, bang, bang,’” she said. “I screamed for my daughter and she came running out.”

“We took off running and I see my grandmother on the ground.”

Martin later held Adams and her daughter inside the home with a gun to their heads until a SWAT team arrived on the scene.

“He heard noise up the steps, and he immediately grabbed me,” she recalled, “and when he did, he put the pistol to my head, and I finally got my hand, and I moved it.

“And when I moved it, the SWAT team came in. and bullets were flying right past me.”

Martin was fatally shot by SWAT officers.
