When emergency crews arrived at Taronte Brown’s Hickman Drive apartment in Atlanta last Feb. 9 after he’d called 911, he told them various stories about what had happened to his then-4-month-old son, Jhkyrie, who had stopped breathing.
Brown said Jhkyrie had vomited and become ill after he had played music and danced with the child, who was rushed to the hospital.
But the stories were “inconsistent” with the injuries Jhkyrie had suffered, said Yvette Jones, spokeswoman for the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office.
On Monday, Brown, 23, was sentenced to 20 years in prison without the possibility of parole after he pleaded guilty in Fulton County Superior Court to voluntary manslaughter, aggravated battery, aggravated assault and cruelty to children in the 1st degree.
According to doctors, Jhkyrie suffered blunt trauma to the head and leg fractures— injuries consistent with what’s commonly known as ‘shaken baby’ syndrome. Six months later, when he was 10 months old, Jhkyrie died.
