A former Athens police officer pleaded guilty to stealing a few hundred dollars from a suspect in 2015.

Christopher Dewayne Miller, 30, was sentenced to three years of probation and 100 hours of community service and had to surrender his police certification, according to Clarke County court records.

He pleaded guilty to charges of violating his oath as a public officer and misdemeanor theft by taking, court records show.

Miller had been with the department for about a year but resigned before the investigation into his conduct was completed, according to his Peace Officer Standards and Training Council file.

He was arrested by the GBI in November 2015, according to the Athens Banner-Herald. The agency investigated a complaint that Miller stole $360 from an Athens man who Miller arrested the month prior.

Internal police department documents obtained by the newspaper shows the complaint was by Frank Snow, who was arrested on a misdemeanor trespassing charge. He bonded out a day after being charged, but Snow complained that he was missing the cash that was in his pocket when he was arrested.

A sergeant conducted an internal review and concluded that Miller stole the money based on his body camera video, the Banner-Herald reported. The department then requested the GBI investigate the incident.

In addition to his sentencing, Miller will have to make financial restitution to Snow.
