A former Athens police officer was arrested Tuesday on allegations that she misappropriated funds and received pay for hours she didn’t work, authorities said.

Cassandra Della Fortuna was charged with one misdemeanor and one felony count of theft and one felony count of violating her oath of office.

In April, Athens police began an investigation into Della Fortuna’s alleged misappropriation of Athens-Clarke County residency supplemental funds, a salary supplement given to officers who live in Athens-Clarke County, police spokesman Geof Gilland said.

The investigation concluded that she inappropriately received more than $3,600, Gilland said.

Della Fortuna, who was born in 1991, worked for the department from December 2017 until earlier this month.
