2 in custody in Athens shooting death; 1 at large

Another suspect in the shooting death of a 31-year-old man in Athens is in custody.

Maurice Lawrence, 31, surrendered Friday in connection with the Oak Hill Drive homicide of Walter James Brown Jr., police spokesman Geoffrey Gilland said in a news release.

Police continue to search for Ralph Bess. Bess, 29, of Athens, is charged with murder.

Police earlier arrested Davonte Jamal Brown, 25, of Athens, and charged him with malice murder.

Police found Walter Brown with multiple gunshot wounds Monday about 8:40 p.m. He was pronounced dead at a hospital, according to Gilland.
