Athens police are searching for a driver who ran over a pedestrian moments after another vehicle hit him early Wednesday.

The initial wreck occurred about 12:30 a.m. in the 2200 block of West Broad Street, Athens police spokesman Officer Kenneth Brooks said in a news release. According to investigators, Alize Lamontre Woodall was walking in the far left lane when he was struck from behind by a Toyota RAV4 and knocked to the ground.

The SUV’s driver turned around and parked his vehicle near Woodall in an attempt to protect Woodall from other cars, authorities said. Another vehicle then drove around the Toyota, striking the injured man a second time before leaving the scene.

Woodall, 24, of Athens, was taken to a hospital with serious head injuries and remains there in critical condition, police said.

Authorities have not released a description of the second car or its driver.

Anyone with information about the hit-and-run is asked to call Athens police at 762-400-7092 or the Crime Stoppers tip line at 706-705-4775.
