An arrest has been made in a September shootout that sent dozens of bullets flying on a Lilburn-area street, killing one of the estimated 20 participants, wounding three more and damaging multiple homes and vehicles.

Gwinnett County police spokesman Cpl. Deon Washington said detectives issued warrants Tuesday charging 23-year-old Lawrenceville resident David Talamantes with aggravated assault and felony murder. He was already in the DeKalb County jail on unrelated charges.

Specifics about Talamantes’ alleged role in the Sept. 23 shootout that left 20-year-old Tre Edwards dead were not provided. His arrest is the first in the case.

“Due to the amount of people who were involved in the shooting, homicide detectives are still actively investigating the case,” Washington said in an emailed statement.

According to information previously released by police, a resident of Reddington Lane called 911 the night of the shooting after seeing a group of 20 or so men gathered on the street and ready to fight. By the time police arrived, dozens of shots had been fired.

Edwards, a Lilburn resident, was shot and killed. Three more people were wounded, including one man found seeking shelter in a nearby shed.

Authorities believe all of the injured parties were participants in the confrontation, but have not released a specific motive behind the incident.

“We have two conflicting parties that had two conflicting viewpoints on some matter that led to a physical confrontation and then the physical confrontation led to a shootout,” Gwinnett police spokesman Cpl. Jake Smith said at the time. “When we have two opposing groups like this and we have a fairly large number of people involved, that will be an angle that we’re going to investigate, whether or not there was any gang activity going on here.”
