A man is in jail and faces burglary charges after allegedly stealing about $20,000 in audio equipment from a popular Athens music club.

“The 40 Watt Club's stolen audio equipment was recovered and a suspect was identified and arrested ...” Athens-Clarke County police said in a Facebook post Wednesday.

Michael Wilson, 36, was arrested about 2 p.m. Tuesday after police said he tried to sell the stolen equipment to a pawn shop in Greenville, S.C.

The pawn shop owner recognized the equipment from a social media post about the burglary and contacted authorities, Athens-Clarke County police spokesman Epifanio Rodriguez said.

Athens officers drove to the pawn shop, reviewed video surveillance and took the video to the 40 Watt Club owner. He recognized the person as a former contractor, Rodriguez said.

After getting his name, officers tracked down his residence and made the arrest, with assistance from Oglethorpe County authorities.

Wilson took multiple microphones, amplifiers and other equipment, Rodriguez said. He faces two counts of burglary.
