A Cobb County woman has been indicted by a grand jury after prosecutors said she left her dog in her SUV for more than four hours, leading to its death.

The indictment was handed down Thursday, nearly seven months after Tanya Lee Kuhlman’s yellow Labrador mix was found unconscious in the back seat of her black Toyota 4Runner on July 20, according to an arrest warrant.

Police discovered the animal in the unattended vehicle in the Target parking lot in the 3300 block of Cobb Parkway, spokeswoman Cpl. Youlanda McIntosh previously said. The dog “appeared in distress,” prompting officers to break the window of the SUV, according to investigators.

Officials took the dog to an animal hospital, where it was pronounced dead.

Police arrested Kuhlman on a felony animal cruelty charge after they determined she was the owner of the dog and the vehicle it was left in. Surveillance video from the store showed the animal was left in the car for at least four hours, investigators said.

Kuhlman was taken to the Acworth Detention Facility, McIntosh said. It is not clear if she was released.
