Superior Court judge retiring Feb. 28

Superior Court Judge Michael C. Clark will retire as presiding judge of the 9th Judicial District Feb. 28.

As a judge, he presided over 100 jury trials and disposed of more than 20,000 cases, including the case against Bart Corbin, a dentist who was charged with two murders that took place a decade apart.

After his retirement, Clark will go into private practice with the law firm Oxendine & Sauls LLC, which will be renamed Clark, Oxendine and Sauls LP.

Georgia Southern hosts family days

Georgia Southern University will host five spring family days for students and their parents on campus in Statesboro and in Atlanta.

Planned events for the Statesboro days on Saturday and March 8 and April 19 will include men’s and women’s basketball games and a baseball game.

Saturday is deadline for comments on River Line

Comments are due by Saturday on the draft Preservation Plan for the Chattahoochee River Line Battlefield, which runs from Mableton through Smyrna north to Vinings.

Group opposes redrawing districts

The Mableton Improvement Coalition is opposing a proposal by the Cobb Legislative Delegation to redraw the four county commission districts.

One result would be the splitting of the Mableton community, according to Joel Cope, the coalition’s president, in a Feb. 17 newsletter to the MIC membership. Noting a similar attempt was made in 2012 by state lawmakers to split Mableton, Cope thanked the Cobb County Board of Commissioners for opposing the change.

School choice deadline Feb. 28 for next year

Cobb County schools students can apply to transfer to a school of their choice through Feb. 28 for the 2014-2015 school year.

Austell increases size of disc golf course

Austell will spend about $12,000 to add nine more holes to the city’s nine-hole Frog Rock Disc Golf Course.

The course opened in May at 6205 Spring St., Louise Suggs Memorial Park behind Wallace Barbecue off Veterans Memorial Highway. It’s free to play.

Disc golf is based on the rules of golf, using discs thrown toward elevated target baskets.

Scholarships available to local students

The Marietta Kiwanis Club is accepting applications through March 31 for nine college and technical school scholarships for Marietta and Cobb students.

Scholarships average $2,000 each, based on academic achievement, financial need and character.

2 wounded in strip club robbery early Tuesday

DeKalb County police are investigating a robbery and shooting outside a strip club early Tuesday that left two men wounded.

The incident happened about 3:30 a.m. outside Strokers, an adult entertainment club on Brockett Road, according to DeKalb police Capt. Stephen Fore.

Fore said a man was robbed and when he attempted to flee, “at least one of the suspects fired several rounds at the victim, striking him in the arm.”

He said one suspect was quickly taken into custody, while a second suspect was located inside the Carriage Oak Apartments and taken into custody. Police are still looking for two suspects, Fore said.

DeKalb congressman opens campaign office

U.S. Rep. Hank Johnson, D-Lithonia, will open his re-election campaign office Saturday in southeast DeKalb County.

Offices will be at 2853 Panola Road, near Lithonia.

DeKalb Sheriff Tom Brown has announced his intent to run against Johnson in the primary.

Qualifying for state and federal races will be between March 3 and 7, and other candidates are expected to come forward in the congressional race.

Clarkston updating town plans

Clarkston is making plans to update a decade-old blueprint for its downtown.

The $80,000 Livable Centers Initiative Grant will help revitalize its town center area to include mixed-income housing and other development, walkability and transportation.

Snellville has named the Greater Eastside Chamber of Commerce as the city’s official municipal chamber of commerce.

Lovejoy gets second jail facility to house 2,000

Lovejoy has annexed 77 acres into the city for the Geo Group Inc., a private prison industry contractor which plans to build a new correctional facility that will create between 400 and 450 jobs, Mayor Bobby Cartwright said Tuesday. The Geo Group will continue to run the Robert A. Deyton Dention Center in Lovejoy and build the new facility which will house another 2,000 inmates once it is done within the next two years.
