A Gwinnett County woman allegedly beat her friend in the head, strangled her to death with an Ethernet cord, and then dumped her body at an abandoned park in July 2013, according to police.

But it would be three months before anyone found the body of 20-year-old Kayla Weil. A cleaning crew found Weil's remains on Oct. 24, 2013, in a bathroom at the park, which had been closed to the public.

On Thursday, the woman accused of killing Weil appeared in a Gwinnett courtroom, Channel 2 Action News reported. Amy Leann McGarity, who was already in jail on unrelated charges, has been charged with murder, aggravated assault, concealing a death, false imprisonment and kidnapping in connection to Weil’s death.

Weil and McGarity were friends before Weil disappeared, her father told Channel 2.

“They were friends for a good while,” Jason Dugas said. “It seemed like wherever one was, the other one was.”

No information was released on a possible motive in the killing, which investigators believe happened in the Buford home where Weil was living. After she was killed, Weil was wrapped in a blanket and driven several miles to Chestnut Ridge Park in Hall County. Weil’s remains were badly decomposed when they were located, police previously said.

“When it came out it was her friend. it was sort of a shock, but they were running with some rough crowds, so it wasn’t completely unexpected,” Dugas said.

McGarity was being held without bond late Thursday at the Gwinnett jail.
