The person found dead inside a burning home was the victim of a homicide, Clayton County police said Tuesday afternoon.

“It appears right now the fire was intentionally started, and it was in several places,” Major Joseph Woodall told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

A neighbor called 911 around 12:30 p.m. after seeing flames coming from the home, in the 700 block of Redland Drive near Jonesboro, Woodall said.

Firefighters arrived quickly and extinguished the fire. The body was located during a search of the home, Battalion Chief David Vazquez said.

The person had a gunshot wound to the back of the head, Vazquez said. An autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of the death and how long the body had been in the home.

“The body seemed to be heavily charred,” Vazquez said. “The body must have been there for a little while before the call came to 911.”

The gender or name of the person killed was not available late Tuesday, pending notification of family members. The GBI is assisting with the investigation.
