The gun allegedly used by a Grady High School student who shot herself had been reported stolen, Atlanta police said Tuesday.
That means 17-year-old Morgan Tukes could face additional charges, Officer John Chafee told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Tukes, of Atlanta, already has a long list of charges following her arrest last week after allegedly shooting herself with a pink .380-caliber handgun in the school’s courtyard. After shooting herself, Tukes walked into the school clinic, bleeding, around 9:30 a.m. Feb. 28, according to school officials and police.
Tukes was transported to the hospital for treatment and arrested the same day on felony possession of a pistol by a minor and three misdemeanors: carrying a weapon within a school safety zone, reckless conduct and disruption of a public school.
Before she could bond out of the Fulton County jail, additional charges were added, stemming from an alleged hit-and-run in October. Tukes was released from jail Friday night after posting bond.
Atlanta police declined to say where Tukes may have gotten the gun she allegedly brought to Grady. Channel 2 Action News reported the gun's serial numbers had been filed down.
The case remains under investigation.
