A Gwinnett County man was trying to take off his jacket when he caused a wreck that killed a 40-year-old mother, police said Wednesday.

Thomas Embry, of Loganville, was booked into the Gwinnett County jail Wednesday afternoon on numerous charges stemming from the Friday night wreck in Grayson. Investigators believe Embry was distracted while driving a Ford F-150 eastbound on U.S. 78, causing him to cross the center line and strike a Nissan Quest head-on, killing a Snellville woman.

U’Lawnda Lewis died at the scene of the wreck and her teenage son was transported to the hospital for treatment of a head laceration, according to Gwinnett police. Embry was also hospitalized after the crash, police said.

On Wednesday, Embry was charged with second-degree vehicular homicide, failure to maintain lane, distracted driving, reckless conduct and not wearing a seatbelt, Cpl. Jake Smith said. Embry was released from jail Wednesday night after posting $7,965 bond, jail records show.

Lewis is survived by her husband, daughter, son, three step-children and several other relatives, according to her online obituary. Her funeral will be held Saturday.
