The GBI is investigating after a Clayton County sheriff’s deputy shot a woman Sunday while responding to a deadly domestic shooting.
The deputy was the first to arrive at the scene on Ward Lane about 5:35 p.m. and encountered the woman, later identified as 36-year-old Twanetta Griffey, the GBI said.
According to the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office, Griffey shot and killed a man before shooting and critically injuring his daughter. She then chased the man’s sister and tried to shoot her before a deputy intervened, the sheriff’s office said.
“During the encounter, Griffey was shot by the deputy,” agency spokeswoman Nelly Miles said. “Griffey was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. A gun was located in close proximity to Griffey.”
The deputy was not injured, Miles said.
Griffey was released from the hospital and booked into the Clayton County jail Monday morning, authorities said. She faces charges of felony murder, four counts of aggravated assault, first-degree cruelty to children and possession of a weapon during a crime, according to online jail records.
“The GBI has been requested to handle the deputy-involved shooting and Clayton County police is handling the domestic shooting committed by the suspect,” the sheriff’s office said in a public advisory.
The officer-involved shooting is the 91st the GBI has been requested to investigate this year, according to the agency. There were 84 such shootings in 2019.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution also tracks officer-involved shootings that don’t involve the GBI, and those numbers sometimes differ from the GBI’s tally.
