Clarke County reports first death from the coronavirus

A 67-year-old man is the first in Clarke County to die from the coronavirus, the Northeast Health District said Tuesday morning.

The man, whose name was not released, died at an Athens hospital and lived in the area, according to Sarah Peck, clinical manager for the Clarke health department.

“In addition to testing positive for COVID-19, he had existing medical conditions,” Peck said in an emailed statement.

Clarke County had 14 confirmed cases of the coronavirus as of Monday evening, according to the Georgia Department of Public Health.
