Several children suffered minor burns Tuesday during a day care trip to a Gwinnett County railroad museum, fire officials said.

The incident happened about 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Southeastern Railway Museum on Buford Highway near Duluth.

Gwinnett fire Capt. Tommy Rutledge said the seven children, who were part of a day care group visiting the museum, “were on a full-size train ride when hot embers blew from the train’s stack and landed on the group.”

He said the children, ranging in age from 4 to 11 years old, sustained small, dime- to quarter-sized first and second degree burns.

“Some have one burn spot and others have two,” Rutledge said.

All the children were assessed and treated by paramedics at the scene, with none requiring transport to the hospital, according to Rutledge.

The day care providers were notifying parents, he said.
