A 51-year-old Canton man shot and killed his wife before turning the gun on himself, the spokesman for the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office said.

Deputies responded Friday afternoon to a person down call in the 1800 block of Woodberry Court and found the bodies of Cary Landers and his wife Katherine Landers.

“Ms. Landers had a single gunshot wound to the face,” Lt. Jay Baker with the Cherokee sheriff’s office said in an emailed statement. “Mr. Landers had a gunshot wound in his mouth.”

A .380 caliber handgun believed to be used in the murder-suicide was located at the scene, he said.

There was a history of violence between the couple, Baker said. Katherine Landers, 41, was charged in March with battery against her husband, he said.

“As part of her condition of bond for that offense,” Baker said, “she was not supposed to have contact with Mr. Landers.”

No other details were available.

An autopsy was scheduled for today at the GBI Crime Lab.

“We’re going to wait till next week to release any information from the autopsy,” Baker said in an email.
