The Cartersville Police Department wants the public to be aware of a scam that has been run at least twice in the area.
Police say the scam involves making a false report of stolen money after money is withdrawn from an ATM.
“After investigating two incidents we found this is a long running scam,” Capt. Mark Camp, Cartersville police spokesman, said in a phone interview.
Camp said the perpetrator asks a person for their bank card and PIN number and arranges to withdraw a certain amount of money. The perpetrator also offers the victim a cut of the withdrawn money and explains that the bank will refund all of the money once the victim reports their purse or wallet was stolen.
“The obvious issue is that you become party to the crimes of fraud, theft by receiving, and conspiracy,” Camp said in the release. He added that the conspiracy charge would be a felony.
Anyone who is approached for this type of criminal activity should call police after getting a good description of the perpetrator and the tag number of the vehicle the person may be driving.
“Unless you personally make a purchase or payment with a debit or credit card, do not give your information to anyone else,” Police Chief Thomas Culpepper said in the statement.
