Injured Carrollton police Sgt. Rob Holloway could not be there in person when his son was recognized at his high school’s senior honors night.
But while Holloway watched from his hospital bed, more than three dozen of his fellow officers and colleagues from the Carrollton Police Department stood in his place to support his son, Grady. The entire audience at Carrollton High School also stood to show their support, according to Sgt. Meredith Browning.
“Words can’t describe the atmosphere and love in that place,” said Browning, a spokeswoman for the police department. “We were all humbled and emotional; that’s for sure.”
Holloway has been in Grady Memorial Hospital’s intensive care unit since he was shot and crashed into a utility pole during a harrowing police chase Monday morning. Two other officers, Carroll County Deputy Jay Repetto and Villa Rica police Officer Chase Gordy, have already been released from hospitals after being treated for gunshot wounds. Another Carroll deputy, Cpl. Jamison Troutt, was injured but was not shot.
Officers returned fire and killed 28-year-old Pier Alexander Shelton, who was shown on dash camera video unloading an AK-47 rifle into the windshield of Repetto’s and Troutt’s patrol car. Shelton’s passenger and cousin, 22-year-old Aaron Jajuan Shelton, was arrested on multiple charges related to the incident.
The officer-involved shooting remains under investigation by the GBI.
Browning said Holloway is in good spirits, and his doctors are pleased by his progress.
“He has a long road and it’s too early to determine what all long-term effects he may or may not have,” she told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Friday. His doctors are optimistic Holloway will be moved out of his room in the ICU this weekend, she said.
“The good news is that everything continues to trend positive,” she said.
