Three metro Atlanta Macy’s locations are among 66 outlets the retailer said Friday will close as part of a previously announced restructuring plan.

The Macy’s department store and furniture store locations at Gwinnett Place Mall will close, as will the Johns Creek Town Center location in Suwanee, Macy’s said Thursday.

The closures are part of a business turnaround plan announced last February called Bold New Chapter. In total, Macy’s previously announced it would close about 150 underperforming stores over a two-year period.

The Gwinnett Place closures are not unexpected as the county has worked to redevelop the struggling mall. Macy’s sold the store locations to Gwinnett County for more than $16 million last year under a deal in which the county leased the retail spaces back to the merchant. At the time, Gwinnett officials said the lease term would end early this year and the stores would close.

Specific closure dates were not announced, but Macy’s said most of the locations identified this week will close by the end of March.

“Closing any store is never easy, but as part of our Bold New Chapter strategy, we are closing underproductive Macy’s stores to allow us to focus our resources and prioritize investments in our go‐forward stores, where customers are already responding positively to better product offerings and elevated service,” Tony Spring, Macy’s chairman and CEO, said in the release.

Macy’s has 22 locations in Georgia, according to its website.
