Gwinnett County police were met with gunfire when they responded to an early morning shooting at a tavern near the Mall of Georgia, authorities said.
The officers were called to the Parma Tavern on Buford Drive after a person was shot in the leg about 1:30 a.m. Friday. When they arrived in the parking lot, someone started shooting, according to police spokeswoman Officer Hideshi Valle.
“Upon arrival, officers heard shots and returned fire,” she told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution from the scene. “There’s no injuries currently to the officers. There’s no known injuries to the suspects. We do not have anybody in custody.”

The initial gunshot victim was taken to a hospital, she said. Investigators are trying to determine what happened at the tavern, an Italian restaurant in a shopping strip that keeps late hours. It was not clear if the victim was wounded inside or outside the business.
“We currently don’t know how it started,” Valle said. “Investigators are still on scene trying to piece everything together.”
