An 81-year-old man is dead after the car he was driving collided with another vehicle Saturday night, officials said.

The man, whose name was not been released, was driving a 1993 Buick Regal on Harve Mathis, according to Athens-Clarke County police spokesman Officer Geoffrey Gilland. A 77-year-old woman was in the front passenger seat alongside him.

A 19-year-old man was driving a 2011 Jeep on U.S. 29, Gilland said. A 19-year-old woman was in the car with him.

The Regal pulled out in front of the Jeep in an attempt to cross the road, and the two cars collided.

The 81-year-old driver was declared dead at the scene. The woman in the Regal had to be extricated from the car and was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Gilland said.

The teen driver, who had a minor injury, and his passenger, who had a possible broken hand, arranged for their own transportation to a local hospital, Gilland said.
