Atlanta police have charged the woman who allegedly caused a two-vehicle crash Saturday afternoon, killing one person and seriously injuring three others while shutting down all lanes on I-75/85 northbound.
Sandra Cottles, 58, was just south of the 17th Street bridge when she hit the rear fender of another vehicle traveling in the HOV lane. The car spun and flipped over, according to Atlanta police spokesman Kim Jones, killing the driver.
Two passengers were ejected from the vehicle and another was also injured. They remain in stable condition at Grady Memorial Hospital, Jones said.
Cottles waited on the scene after the crash and was not hurt. She is charged with homicide by vehicle in the second degree and failure to maintain lane and was being held at Fulton County Jail.
Northbound traffic was backed up for miles through much of the afternoon as police and fire officials investigated the accident.
David Dweyer told Channel 2 Action News said his truck overheated while he was sitting in the gridlock. “We got on at Freedom Parkway and it was already locked up. Traffic was not moving,”
