The cold rain that fell across metro Atlanta overnight will be replaced by drier and much warmer weekend weather, with afternoon highs approaching 70 degrees.
The rain was tapering off before daybreak, with only light drizzle scattered across north Georgia.
In the far northeast corner of the state, the rain was mixed with a little snow and sleet, but no travel problems were reported. A winter weather advisory remained in effect through 10 a.m. for more of the wintry mix, but accumulations were expected to be limited to about 1 inch, and only at higher elevations.
Temperatures at 5 a.m. ranged from 38 in Cartersville and Dallas and 39 in Dunwoody and Peachtree City to 41 in Marietta and at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.
Rainfall totals through 5 a.m. included .17 inch in Peachtree City, .22 inch in Chamblee and Dunwoody, .49 inch at Hartsfield and 1.34 inches in Cartersville.
Channel 2 meteorologist Karen Minton said skies will become partly sunny during the afternoon Friday, when temperatures will be in the upper 50s.
Saturday and Sunday will be sunny, Minton said, with highs each day in the upper 60s. Morning lows will be in the low 40s Saturday and low 50s Sunday, she said.
The great weekend weather will hold over into the first part of the work week, with highs in the upper 60s Monday and low 70s Tuesday and lows in the upper 40s each day.
