A Suwanee animal shelter has temporarily closed due to mold being found inside the building.

Georgia Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals on Buford Highway in Gwinnett County has moved all of its animals to the Atlanta Humane Society’s two locations during the renovations and mold removal, Christina Hill, Director of Marketing and Communications for AHS, told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Hill said the Humane Society merged with SPCA in April, and about 20 to 30 animals have been relocated for the renovations. The SPCA staff will also temporarily work and train at AHS’s locations.

“(SPCA’s building) is what we call a boutique-type facility, which is very small,” Hill said. “It was not built to be an animal shelter, which is not uncommon.”

The mold was discovered by an inspection company hired by AHS after the merger to assess the building.

Hill said they expect the SPCA building to reopen sometime in mid-June.
