A man died more than a month after he was hit by a car while crossing a road in Gwinnett County, police said Monday.

Antonio Hopson, 27, of Memphis, Tenn., died in hospice care June 20, Gwinnett police spokeswoman Cpl. Michele Pihera said in a statement. Hopson was struck by a black Chevrolet Malibu while trying to cross Peachtree Industrial Boulevard more than a month before, she said.

The collision happened about 5 a.m. May 10, according to an incident report. A driver was going about 50 mph when he hit Hopson, the report said.

The driver was not hurt in the wreck. Hopson was taken to Gwinnett Medical Center with life-threatening head injuries and a leg injury. A witness who tried to pull Hopson out of the way of the car was also injured, according to the report.

The driver told police he had a green light when the crash happened. A witness told police the light at the intersection was red and the pedestrian sign was counting down as they crossed the road.

Gwinnett police are still investigating the incident.
