A 25-year-old man accused of breaking into a Clayton County residence, raping a woman and then stealing items from the home was arrested Tuesday by U.S. Marshals, police said.
Then, James Arthur Ramsey III wrote an apology letter to the victim, according to Officer Eddie Soto with Clayton County police.
Ramsey, of Jonesboro, was arrested in southwest Atlanta and transported to Clayton County police headquarters. He was charged with rape, burglary, false imprisonment, aggravated assault and robbery for the alleged crimes, Soto said.
According to police, a man broke into a house on Sycamore Drive about 2:40 a.m. Sunday. Upon entering the home, the suspect sexually assaulted a female resident and was in the residence between five and 10 minutes and spoke at length with the victim, according to a news release from Sheriff Victor Hill. The suspect then left, taking with him a 42-inch television and a cell phone, police said.
After releasing a sketch of the suspect, investigators identified the man as Ramsey and asked for the public’s help in locating him. Sheriff’s deputies and Marshals assisted police with the investigation.
“After being questioned by Clayton County police detectives, Ramsey did admit to the crimes committed and wrote an apology letter to the victim,” Soto said in an emailed statement.
Ramsey was being held Tuesday night in the Clayton County jail.
