A Cobb County man shot and killed an intruder in his home late Tuesday, police said today.

Investigators were called minutes after 11 p.m. to a home in the 1800 block of Dorsey Road, near Canton Road in the Marietta area, according to Officer Mike Bowman with Cobb police.

“When they arrived, they met with the homeowner who told them that he had just shot an intruder inside his home,” Bowman said in an emailed statement. “In addition, the homeowner told investigators that he saw a second suspect leave the area in a vehicle.”

The homeowner told Channel 2 Action News that he was interviewed by detectives for hours before being released. Two men banged on his door late Tuesday and forced their way into his home, with the first man screaming at him, the homeowner said.

After he shot the first man, the homeowner watched the second man run away and get into a waiting car, Channel 2 reported.

Tonight, police identified the deceased man as Michael Verucci, 30, of Marietta, Bowman said. Police do not expect to file charges in the case.

Anyone with information about the case should call the Cobb County police at 770-499-3945.
