A woman remains in critical condition at an Atlanta hospital after being hit by a car in Brookhaven on Sunday, authorities said.

The incident took place about 5 p.m. on North Druid Hills Road near Buford Highway, Brookhaven police said. The woman, identified as 62-year-old Denise Ann Parker of Brookhaven, was struck by a black Lexus while crossing in a shaded area outside of a crosswalk, police said in a news release.

The Lexus’ driver tried to “take evasive action” but was unable to avoid hitting the woman, police said. Along with several witnesses, the driver stayed at the scene until officers arrived.

The witnesses told police that Parker began crossing the street and tried to run back to the sidewalk after seeing the Lexus approaching, according to an incident report. The driver, a 24-year-old woman from Atlanta, tried to slow down and swerve out of the way, but was unsuccessful, police said.

Investigators do not anticipate charges in this case.
