A fast-moving overnight fire that apparently started in a Clarkesville restaurant spread to about a half-dozen downtown buildings.

Channel 2 Action News reported that some of the buildings damaged by the 11 p.m. Wednesday blaze were more than 100 years old.

No injuries were reported in the fire, which apparently started in the Sweet Breads Café on East Water Street in the Habersham County town before spreading to neighboring buildings.

"We are heartbroken at the devastation tonight in Clarkesville and the loss our community has experienced tonight," the restaurant posted on its Facebook page. "Our prayers go out to everyone, especially those who have directly been touched by this tragedy."

"Those buildings are filled with heart pine," Habersham County Commissioner Natalie Crawford told Channel 2. "Sweet Breads was heart pine; it was really no stopping it."

The cause of the fire was under investigation Thursday.
